In prep sports, we are a currently in between the winter and spring season. For me, this means putting an emphasis on other sports. Like jr. high volleyball for example, or as in today’s case, 5th and 6th grade basketball.
The teams were large in size and the young boys put their hearts into it. If pro athletes only had the same ego and played as hard as these kids the wide world of sports would be much more enjoyable for the average fan. One thing that surprised me, and I guess it shouldn’t have, was that someone actually kept a scorebook. Do statistics really matter in a 5th and 6th grade game?
I have to applaud the coaches for realizing that it’s not all about winning. I don’t think every kid got to play, which is still a crying shame, but most saw some action.
Anyway, it was fun to shoot and the young kids will love to see an article in the paper about them with a couple of photographs. That’s one thing I love about this job. No matter how dull the assignment may sound, it will make someone’s day to have their picture taken and be in the paper. Their friends and family will cut it out, post it on a refrigerator, or mail it to them. Someone will keep that picture and always remember the time that they were in the newspaper.
